Margate, Florida Nursing Home Abuse
Unlike other cities in Broward County, Margate is only home to one nursing home, Margate Health & Rehabilitation Center. Margate Health and Rehab is owned by Gulf Coast Health Care. Unfortunately, some of the reviews of Margate Health & Rehab suggest that the reviewers felt there was neglect at this facility. Online reviews from former residents and their families offer specific criticism. One reviewer stated that residents do not receive showers on a regular basis. Other reviewers stated that it took at least 30 minutes for staff to respond to call lights. Another observed one patient called for help for 40 minutes before someone checked in on her. Others reported that a relative was left in wet clothing because no one was around to change her, and patients were not appropriately changed, moved, or assisted to the bathroom.
Additionally, Margate Health and Rehab was inspected by Florida’s state agency, AHCA. When AHCA finds violations of rules and regulations governing nursing homes, they issue a deficiencies report. Margate Health and Rehab has been cited in 14 pages of deficiencies on 6/19/2019 and another 16 pages of deficiencies on 6/20/2019.
Blowing the Whistle on Margate Nursing Home Neglect
If you observe conduct of this nature, this may be an indication of nursing home neglect. Failing to bathe a patient on a regular basis, not turning the patient as to prevent the development of bedsores, and not responding to call lights are callous and against Florida skilled nursing regulations. If you notice these signs, it is important to not only attempt to have the nursing home and state agencies remedy the situation, but to also consider seeking legal counsel. Often, a lawsuit is the fastest way to force a negligent nursing home to treat its residents with the care that they are entitled to.
Margate, FL Assisted Living Negligence
Margate, Florida currently has 11 licensed assisted living facilities. The larger ALF’s in Margate include Waterside Landing, VIP Care Pavilion, Margate Manor and Livewell at Coral Plaza.
Some of Margate’s assisted living facilities also have reports of substandard conditions. Livewell at Coral Plaza is an assisted living facility that advertises itself as a facility especially equipped to care for seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Rooms cost approximately $3,000 per month. Family members of former residents, however, found that the facility was “dangerous” and neglectful. One reviewer’s mother suffered an unexplained black eye, for which she allegedly received no medical care from the facility. According to the reviewer, her daughter ended up calling 911 and having her mother taken to a hospital for care. She also noted that those who needed help to eat were not provided that assistance and that she walked into the dining room to find her mother “sitting all alone, far away from the table, hunched over, trying to reach her food to eat.” An October 24, 2018 Complaint to AHCA resulted in a violation of Resident Care – Rights and Facility Procedures. That same inspection also resulted in a violation of Staffing Standards at the Livewell at Coral Plaza assisted living memory care facility.
Waterside Landing assisted living facility has 8 documented substantiated complaints with AHCA. This facility has allowed its Margate assisted living facility license to lapse.
VIP Care Pavilion was cited in a May 6, 2019 survey for failing to properly supervise it’s residents and violating resident care rights and procedures.
Margate Assisted Living Negligence Lawsuit
It is important to remember that Florida law requires that residents of nursing homes be treated courteously, fairly, and with the fullest measure of dignity, and that residents of assisted living facilities be “treated with consideration, respect and with due recognition of personal dignity, individuality, and the need for privacy.” Violations of the kind listed above are, therefore, unlawful.

Reviews of nursing homes and assisted living facilities are helpful to future residents and their families. Yet, leaving a negative review of a facility does not address the lack of care of these facilities, or the emotional, physical, and psychological distress experienced by loved ones at the hands of negligent nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Similarly, reporting nursing home abuse may result in an investigation, but there is no guaranteed action at the state level.
