Northwest Florida Nursing Home Negligence Facts
Pensacola Nursing Home Abuse, Neglect & Negligence
Located in northwest Florida, Pensacola is a relatively small city with approximately 52,000 residents. The city is known for being located in a bay near the Gulf of Mexico and boasting a heritage that includes being under Spanish, French, British, and American rule. As a beach city, it is an attractive location for tourists and retirees. The senior population of Pensacola, according to the 2022 U.S. Census, was almost 19% of the population, and this number grows annually.
With a growing senior population, Pensacola and Northwest Florida are home to a booming long term care industry. Escambia County alone has almost 30 assisted living facilities.
Despite its significant senior population and gorgeous locale, some Pensacola nursing homes and ALF’s have been criticized for failing to provide adequate care to their residents.
Pensacola Nursing Home Negligence Lawsuits & Legal Issues
In April 2019, a jury awarded the family of Bertha Davis $200,000 after she suffered a fatal fall. The jury found that the nursing home, Pensacola Health Care Facility, was negligent in caring for Ms. Davis and that their lack of supervision caused Ms. Davis’ fall.
In another case, a 90-year old woman was admitted to the hospital from the Rosewood Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Pensacola. The doctors found that she was dehydrated, malnourished, had several bruises and scabs on her back, had “skin growing over bandages,” and was suffering from sepsis due to an untreated urinary tract infection. These injuries allegedly caused her death the following day. According to an investigative report conducted by USA Today Network – Florida, the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) had not taken any action in this case. In contrast, the Department of Children and Families determined that this was a case of medical neglect.
The USA Today Network – Florida report also found that AHCA was often aware of the problems at nursing homes, citing them several times in the years or months preceding a fatal event, for similar problems. This was the case for Pensacola assisted living facility Alpine Adult Care, a small, 14-bed institution. AHCA issued an emergency moratorium on further admissions into the Pensacola facility after the organization found that some of the staff were not trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, residents were often not given the correct dosage of their medication at the times required, and that some were given expired prescription drugs. The emergency moratorium went into effect after the facility’s failure to administer medication via an inhaler at the proper time led to one resident’s death. However, the action taken by AHCA did not mean that Alpine Adult Care was required to shut its doors. It remains open as AHCA continues to monitor and investigate the facility.
In 2022, an official death investigation was opened after a 66 year old resident died at the Pensacola Developmental Center. The victim’s family blamed his death on the Pensacola facility, alleging that he died after being left in a hot van.
