Sunrise, Florida Nursing Home Abuse & Neglect
Although not nearly as notorious as the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills in which fourteen people died after it lost power due to Hurricane Irma, a facility at Sunrise suffered a similar fate. A Facebook post complaining of the conditions at a Sunrise nursing home led Florida officials to investigate, where they found that the facility had been without power for three days. City of Sunrise officials stepped in and provided power generators to avoid the residents suffering a fate similar to those at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills.
Nursing homes are required to have emergency power plans, which the Agency for Heath Care Administration (AHCA) is supposed to monitor. The lack of oversight by AHCA is clear when one is faced with fourteen deaths due to a loss of power. The residents at the Sunrise nursing home could have been additional fatalities, if not for one fortunate Facebook post.
In addition to inadequate emergency power plans, some Sunrise nursing facilities and assisted living facilities have been accused of being “infested with roaches” or generally careless in how they treat their patients. One reviewer of Brookdale Sunrise noted that his parent, who suffered from dementia, was transported to the emergency room for a UTI check, alone. The parent in question is “deeply paranoid” and to transport her alone would have posed a danger to her safety. At another time, the same reviewer was asked to remove his father from the facility immediately, with no prior notice or time to prepare other living arrangements for him.
Other nursing homes in Sunrise have also been subject to reviews that suggest negligent behavior. For example, in January 2019, a reviewer of Sunrise Health & Rehabilitation Center recalled an instance in which his mother-in-law appeared to be suffering a stroke. Although the staff and paramedics employed by Sunrise Health & Rehabilitation were available, no one called an ambulance to take her to the hospital. The reviewer finally called 911 himself to get his mother-in-law the medical attention she required. Had he not been there, this conduct could have resulted in her death. Another reviewer of the same nursing home stated that she had her husband transferred to another facility the same day they arrived at Sunrise Heath & Rehabilitation Center after she realized that the bed was broken, and a nurse that came in believed that she was there to dress a wound and had no idea that the reviewer’s husband had dementia.
