Allegations: In October of 2023, a nursing home neglect case against Lakeland Hills Center was filed on behalf of the Estate of Victor D. Burch. The case’s complaint alleges that due to staff negligence, Mr. Burch suffered from the development and deterioration of several pressure ulcers, urinary tract infections (UTIs), aspiration pneumonia, severe malnutrition, and severe sepsis. As a result of the aforementioned injuries, Mr. Burch suffered an untimely death.
Smith, James E/O vs. Lakeland Hills Center
Allegations: The Personal Representative of James Smith’s Estate, Nikisha N. Alston, sued Lakeland Hills Center for nursing home negligence in January of 2023. Alston alleged that during Smith’s time at the facility, his care was severely neglected by staff, resulting in Smith suffering from preventable falls and the overall deterioration of his health. Mr. Smith passed away from the injuries he suffered at Lakeland Hills Center.
Harvey, Johnnie M. E/O vs. Lakeland Hills Center
Allegations: The Estate of Johnnie M. Harvey filed a nursing home neglect lawsuit against Lakeland Hills Center in August of 2020. According to the complaint, during his stay at the facility, Mr. Harvey suffered from osteomyelitis and MRSA infections in a surgical wound, the development of pressure ulcers, and several falls. These injuries and infections ultimately resulted in Mr. Harvey passing away.
Barnett, Sandra vs. Lakeland Hills Center
Allegations: Sandra Barnett sued Lakeland Hills Center in 2019. Barnett alleges that during her stay at the facility, she suffered from the development of hypernatremia, drop foot, bedsores on her feet, and lactic acidosis. Barnett was transferred by ambulance to the hospital after being found unresponsive at Lakeland Hills Center. At the hospital, she was diagnosed with critical illness polyneuropathy, which resulted in partial paralysis.
Deficiencies at Lakeland Hills Center for Resident Care Violations
September 28th, 2023, Inspection at Lakeland Hills Center
During an inspection at Lakeland Hills Center in late September of 2023, it was found that staff had failed to keep the medication error rate below 5%. Surveyors observed a total of five residents during medication administration. Nurses made medication errors with two of the five observed residents.
July 18th, 2023, Inspection at Lakeland Hills Center
Based on observations and interviews, inspectors determined that Lakeland Hills Center had failed in providing appropriate bathing and toileting care for one of their residents. During the inspection, a surveyor observed Resident #1 sitting in a urine-soaked bed. Resident #1 told the surveyor that she is supposed to have staff help her to the toilet, but only “sometimes” receives assistance.
