How are California Nursing Homes Rated?
All California nursing homes are evaluated and rated by the federal government through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
CMS has an easy to understand 5-Star rating. A 1-Star rating is “Much Below Average,” a 2-Star rating is “Below Average,” a 3-Star rating is “Average,” a 4-Star rating is “Above Average,” and a 5-Star rating is “Much Above Average.”
These ratings are based on a nursing home’s performance with health, complaint, and infection control inspections, staffing reports, and quality care measures. CMS ratings change frequently and are updated on Medicare’s website.
Quick Statistics on California Nursing Homes
According to the California Association of Health Facilities (CAHF), there are approximately 1,230 licensed nursing homes in California. Additionally, more than 400,000 Californians are cared for each year in nursing facilities. ElderGuide, an online tool similar to Medicare’s Care Compare, collects, and evaluates data from nursing homes nationwide.
According to their calculations, California ranks 34th across the nation for nursing home quality. Approximately 7.61% of California nursing home residents suffer from pressure ulcers (also known as bed sores or decubitus ulcers).
The average rating of CA nursing facilities from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is 3.25 out of 5 stars. As of the date of this post, 391 of California’s 1,230 nursing homes are rated either “Below Average” or “Much Below Average.” 31.8% of California’s nursing homes are rated 2-Star or below.
